Final Blog Posting

1.) What I have learned from completing my research paper is how to properly structure it, there is more that goes into a research paper than what I expected such as having the skill to choose scholarly and lengthy quality work, having a set plan on how to conduct, and making sure your thesis is as general and clear as possible. Usually when I would write a research paper I would get all of my information from google, I would skim over the information provided but not really examine the whole article. Now that I am aware of sources such as research speed dial, I can have easy access to more reliable sources. Research speed dial has been very helpful throughout this course, and for future reference I will be sure to use this cite again. I now have a better understand of research paper and now but my feelings on it has not changed, it is still not my best choice of writing, and the only way I could see myself writing one is if it is required.

2. ) I would definitely recommend research speed dial to a future student and essay maps to help them complete a successful paper for ENG 103. This two sources can definitely help an individual who needs direction on how to go about creating information to support their topic.

3.) I would have used more Film stills to support my essay because it would have made my essay stronger, and more scholarly. When I picked out scenes from the movie, It was from me taking notes from watching the movie at once. Picking out certain scenes, could of helped me to discover things that didn't seem appealing to me when I first watched or to discover something I didn't notice before to help me.

Research Paper To Do List

During the next two weeks, I need to work on adding the required amount of pages to complete my paper, using more databases such as the encyclopedia to support by thesis, and editing my overall paper to fulfill a detailed, general research paper. I will also need to fix the heading of my paper such as professor Dragon recommended. When I complete these requirements, I will be sure to go to the writing center to receive a second or third opinion on my progress.

Film Stills in Temple Grandin

I will be analyzing the film still I chose in class which is Temple Grandin. The first still shows Mary Temple Grandin in her squeeze machine which is a machine for autistic individuals. While she is in this machine it shows her friend/roommate walking in the room noticing it, with a confused look on her face. I believe this still does a good job at showing emotion and it gives viewers a chance who haven't seen the movie, almost guess correctly as to what is going on.

The third still shows Temple standing at an event amongst many people in an audience. This creates the vision of Temple making an announcement, which is important. The audience is facing Temple with a surprising look on their faces. The man on Stage expression looks a bit annoyed, as if he doesn't believe what Temple is saying but he is most likely just in denial. Temple Grandin is attending this event such as everyone else, and later mentions she has autism. The audience doesn't know so when she mentions it, everyone has that surprising look on their faces being that Temple was speaking so well and fluent to many that were there.

For my research paper I will be argue how Alzheimer's Disease in the Notebook is depicted versus what is the actual symptoms and outcomes in society. I have found many articles which helps support my thesis, and most were from the research speed dial.

The first source I have found is intitled "Alzheimer's Disease as a cause of death in the United States by Donna L. Hoyert and Harry M. Rosenberg. It was found on JSTOR by me simply typing in Alzheimer's Disease. With this source I have found out some information, I wasn't aware of before that can be beneficial knowledge not only for my Research paper but as information to built my knowledge on things. With the title it gives you an idea of what this article is a bit about but of course doesn't give off all information. "It is nearly impossible trying to remember events ten years back, and has never happened with individuals within the Unites states" Donna L. Hoyert. This supports my thesis because this is what happened to Allie, she remembered her and Noah as a couple for a few minutes, and this creates a fantasy for some because in real life it has never happened.  Also my article gives you a background on the disease itself, the amount of years it's been in existence in the United States, and tells what scientist are doing to try and help the disease for senior citizens. I decided to choose this source and not others because I believed the quality of information was most valuable and the others sources I examined weren't enough information provided. Three prior articles I picked were only about two paragraphs long and it didn't give clear information to support my thesis as well.

Alzheimer's Disease Alistair Burns and Steve Iliffe was my second source and what I found most interesting about this source was it compares two people that are living in Nursing homes with the actual disease. I felt this article would give me a better idea so that I will have the opportunity to compare a person in society versus Allie which is the person who has Alzheimer's in the movie. I received this article for the same database as well. I believe this article also provided a good amount of information, and it was detailed enough for me to understand what was going on. It wasn't too hard to read such as some scholarly sources and most importantly it supports my thesis so that I have the chance to use quotations from the article instead of just stating what I am reading about.

My topic is Portraying Human Minds in film and movie of choice is The Notebook. I have found found a few articles to support my thesis but not many. For the next milestone I will add the film as one of my sources and also find more encyclopedia and additional sources. The Research Speed Dial has helped as far as scholarly and journalistic articles but not with the ones I have listed that I need. I will be sure to not only use the internet or Research Speed dial as my database but hard copy books and newspaper articles as well.

Portraying Human Minds is my research topic. The two films of choice is Enduring Love and The Notebook because both dig into the minds of characters and romance. Enduring Love shows how one can be so obsessive over another person without them even knowing it, and the notebook shows how one can care so much about another even with a health condition such as Alzheimer's.

Kiya's Welcome Post

My name is Kiya Mcmillian, and I am currently a sophomore here at LaGuardia Community College. My experience has been overwhelming but I have managed to make it this far. I started out as a Liberal Arts major my first year, because I wasn't sure of what exactly I wanted to study. But by the time of my second semester, I was sure that Communications was best for me. I wanted to focus more on Public Relations aspect of it but the College didn't offer that major for me, and communications was the closest thing to PR. Even though Public Relations isn't offered here, they still have a class that is dedicated to the study so that you have the opportunity to learn more about it. After I graduate here I would like to transfer to a four year school so that I can receive more knowledge on my career choice.

My favorite genre of Film is Horror. I often watch scary movies because I enjoy the excitement. I don't read books often unless it's required because I always find myself being bored after the first five chapters but sometimes I force myself to read to build better vocabulary, in my speech and it does help me while writing. As far as Technology, I know the basics. I believe I am both a technology optimist and pessimist because I am a positive thinker when I know what I am doing, but when I don't I am the complete opposite. I am negative when I am not confident about what I am doing and believe most individuals are like that as well.
